Prince (né le 7 juin 1958) est un chanteur et musicien de funk et de pop américain.
Biographie
Prince Rogers Nelson, connu sous le nom d'artiste Prince, est un auteur-compositeur-chanteur américain, s'étant illustré depuis la fin des années 1970 comme un musicien multi-instrumentiste d'une très grande prolixité.
Prince est né le 7 juin 1958 à Minneapolis, dans l'État du Minnesota, ville où il demeure toujours.
Pendant quelques années, au milieu des années 90, Prince a abandonné son nom pour des raisons à la fois personnelles et contractuelles (conflit avec sa maison de disques de l'époque). Il a opté à la place pour un symbole imprononçable entremêlant les signes « mâle » et « femelle ». Placés devant la nécessité de le nommer malgré tout, les médias l'ont rapidement affublé, entre autres, de l'acronyme « TAFKAP » pour « The artist formerly known as Prince », ou du pseudonyme « Love Symbol ». Durant cette période, il fut par ailleurs l'un des premiers artistes à tenter la diffusion de ses titres et albums en vente directe hors maison de disque, via l'Internet.
Son style musical, inspiré notamment par le funk expérimental de Shuggie Otis, George Clinton ou Sly Stone, oscille principalement entre le rock, le jazz et le funk groovy. Prince est un musicien complet et confirmé, et éternel insatisfait ; on relate ainsi son processus de création : partant d'un instrument (par exemple le piano), il compose sa mélodie. Puis, il ajoute ou supprime d'autres instruments au fur et à mesure, jusqu'à ce que le résultat lui convienne. Les rumeurs font état de 600 chansons inédites enregistrées et conservées confidentiellement dans son studio personnel de Minneapolis.
La critique comme le public ont acclamé certains de ses albums, comme Sign o' the times (1987), Purple rain (1984) ou Lovesexy (1988). Ses amateurs lui reconnaissent en outre un sens incontestable de la mélodie, perceptible dans les ballades disséminées dans son abondante discographie (au moins une ballade par album), et un certain penchant pour le savoir-faire des crooners.
