Le genre Nepenthes regroupe des espèces de plantes carnivores passives de la famille des Népenthacées, trouvées dans la zone intertropicale humide de l'« ancien monde ». Le genre est présent sur le triangle formé par Madagascar, le Khasi Indien, et la Nouvelle-Calédonie.
Νεπένθος (Du grec ancien Νε-, « non » et πένθος, « tristesse ») désigne chez Homère la boisson que Pâris donna à boire à Hélène après son enlèvement pour lui faire oublier son pays natal.
